Why we do what we do

Brighter Day was founded by Angela Bingham because of the personal struggles she experienced when trying to place her father in senior facilities. Without help or guidance, Angela learned many aspects of the process the hard way which left her feeling frustrated and alone.

Angela’s father was in and out of the hospital in his later years - many facilities do not hold your room if the resident finds themselves in the hospital for any stint of time leaving Angela to have to find a new facility for her father multiple times. Even determining the level of care her father needed became a minefield with lots of trial and error.

Not all facilities or services are right for every senior. The advisors at Brighter Day will help seniors and families navigate this delicate time in their lives.

Care Facilities and Services

Independent Living

Independent living is an option for seniors that are able to live independently on their own or with limited assistance. The difference between assisted living facilities and independent living facilities is the level of assistance needed for the residents.

Independent senior living communities most commonly offer apartment or cottage-style living arrangements and are best for seniors that would benefit from companionship, social activities, fitness equipment and other programs.

Independent Living Communities usually have many fun activities for seniors to enjoy. They bring in various entertainment avenues like movie nights, arrange game nights, musicians, clubs and classes. They also offer outings to local fun spots. One of the main goals for Independent communities is socialization.

Many of these facilities offer traditional dining services, housekeeping, laundry and transportation. The amenities vary from facility to facility; however, some also offer pools, spas, and onsite hair salons.

Assisted Living

An Assisted Living Community is a system of housing and limited care that is designed for senior citizens who need some assistance with daily activities but do not require care in a more dependent environment.

These communities provide a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence. Many communities also offer social activities, transportation outside of the facility and entertainment.

Assisted living communities can be in freestanding communities, or integrated with skilled nursing homes or hospitals, as components of continuing care retirement communities, or at independent housing complexes.

Seniors who prefer companionship where household chores are performed should consider this option. A few of amenities offered at assisted living facilities are listed below:

Personal care services: Bathing, grooming, dressing, medication assistance
Daily activities: Exercise programs, games, art and crafts, music
Off-site outings, entertainment, events
Transportation service
24-hour care and staff

Senior Apartment

Age-restricted multi-unit housing with self-contained living units for older adults who are able to care for themselves.

They often offer an easier lifestyle for an older adult since there is no more yard work and household repairs. And because senior apartments are age restricted, older adults are surrounded by people of similar age and interests.

There are no universal criteria in place to qualify to live in senior apartments; as such, all senior apartments will likely have their own set of qualifications for residency. Some senior apartments have minimum age requirements, which is usually somewhere between 50 and 62, while others are geared toward low- or fixed-income seniors, and therefore have maximum income requirements in place.

Seniors may choose senior apartments for social reasons, for lifestyle reasons, or for safety and security reasons.

Senior apartments often offer a plethora of features and benefits, including:

Low- or no-maintenance living
Gated and secured entrances and buildings
Building activities
Private grounds

Skilled Nursing Home

Facility licensed by the state that provides 24-hour nursing care, room and board, and activities for convalescent residents and those with chronic and/or long-term care illnesses.

Ideally, a nursing home should be considered when in-home care or an assisted living facility is no longer enough to meet the needs of your family member.

A nursing home is the most extensive level of care for seniors, outside of a hospital. Nursing homes provide a high level of care and assistance including help getting in and out of bed, assistance with eating, bathing and dressing.

These facilities provide skilled medical care from registered nurses and other specialty trained professionals such as physicians, occupational and respiratory therapists.

Living arrangements at these facilities vary, but typically offer both private and shared rooms. Traditionally, the facility has been designed with patient ease as the primary goal.

Adult Day Care

A daily structured program for adults who are not capable of full independent living as a result of physical disability including dementia, or developmental disability, emotional impairment.

Adult day care programs provide therapeutic programs of social and health services, as well as, activities for adults who have functional impairments in a protective environment.

Adult Day Care Centers are designed to provide care and companionship for older adults who need assistance or supervision during the day. Programs offer relief to family members and caregivers, allowing them to go to work, handle personal business, or just relax while knowing their relative is well cared for and safe.
The goals of the programs are to delay or prevent institutionalization by providing alternative care, to enhance self-esteem, and to encourage socialization.

Centers are usually open during normal business hours and may stand alone or be located in senior centers, nursing facilities, places of faith, hospitals, or schools. The staff may monitor medication, serve hot meals and snacks, perform physical or occupational therapy, and arrange social activities. They may also help to arrange transportation to and from the center.

In-Home Health Care

Provision of medical and nursing services in the individual's home by a licensed provider.

Memory Care

Memory care is a distinct form of long-term care designed to meet the specific needs of a person with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or other types of memory problems.

Memory care usually has a very structured environment in order to eliminate stress for the seniors. Memory care facilities usually offer the same amenities of most assisted living places by providing daily meals, helping seniors get bathed and dressed, as well as, dispensing medications. They are different because they offer additional services that cater to the needs of patients with memory issues. Activities are usually planned to help the patient stay calm and not get confused or upset. Memory care facilities offer more security to prevent patients from being able to wander off. Usually the doors require codes to open and are alarmed.

If your loved one already has an Alzheimer’s diagnosis you should specifically seek out a memory care facility.

Hospice Care

Care and comfort measures provided to those with a terminal illness and their families- it can include medical, counseling, and social services.

Most hospice care is furnished in-home, while specialized hospices or hospitals also provide this service.

Hospice can provide inpatient care for those in nursing or other facilities but can also help those who wish to remain in their own homes. Many people want to stay in a familiar environment and remain as close as possible to loved ones. We believe hospice care should be available where the patient lives, no matter where that is.
